Made to Measure vs Bespoke — What's the Difference?
Share
The terms 'made to measure' and 'bespoke' are used interchangeably by many suit brands — including some that shouldn't. Understanding the difference matters, especially when you're spending $1,400 or more on a suit. Customers from New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, Nashville, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Charlotte, and every major US city ask us this question regularly. Here's the honest answer.
What is bespoke?
Bespoke is the highest tier of tailoring. A bespoke suit is made from scratch using measurements and a unique pattern created specifically for one client — from a blank sheet. The process typically involves multiple in-person fittings, usually at least two or three, where the tailor makes adjustments to the cut pattern before finalising the garment.
True bespoke tailoring is time-intensive, handcraft-intensive, and expensive. A genuine bespoke suit from a Savile Row tailor in London costs from £4,000 to £10,000 or more. The process takes weeks or months and requires you to visit the tailor in person multiple times — not practical for most men in the USA.
What is made to measure?
Made to measure uses your measurements to modify an existing base pattern to fit your specific body. A skilled made-to-measure tailor adjusts the pattern's proportions to match your measurements before cutting your suit.
The quality of made to measure varies enormously by brand. At its best — as with SuitedNoir — it produces a suit that fits as well as bespoke for the vast majority of body types, at a fraction of the cost. At its worst, it's barely distinguishable from a well-altered off-the-rack suit.
What does SuitedNoir offer?
At SuitedNoir, we use your measurements to build each suit's cutting pattern from your proportions — not simply adjust a standard template. Every pattern is drafted specifically for your chest, waist, shoulders, sleeve length, back length, and inseam. This puts our process closer to the bespoke end of the spectrum than most brands that call themselves 'made to measure'.
The key differences from true Savile Row bespoke: we work remotely — no in-person fittings, and we work from your self-submitted measurements rather than a tailor taking them in person. We address this through our free alterations guarantee — if anything needs adjusting after delivery, we sort it at no cost. Shipped to all 50 US states, tracked and insured.
Which should you choose?
For most men, a high-quality made-to-measure suit delivers 90–95% of the result of bespoke at 20–30% of the cost. The fit difference is meaningful but not transformative — and detectable only by someone who knows what to look for.
If you're a head of state or simply want the absolute best money can buy with time for multiple fittings — bespoke is worth the investment. For everyone else — professionals in New York, executives in Chicago, grooms in Los Angeles, and men across all 50 states — a well-made made-to-measure suit is the smarter, better-value choice.
