A red suit is a costume. A burgundy suit is a decision. The difference is saturation and darkness: burgundy sits close enough to black in value that it reads as formal from a distance, and only reveals its colour up close and in good light. That is a very sophisticated thing for a suit to do.

It flatters darker and olive complexions particularly well, and holds up beautifully against a white shirt and black shoes — one of the few non-neutral colours that does.

Where it belongs

Autumn and winter weddings. Evening events. Anywhere the light is low and warm, because that is where burgundy stops being a colour and becomes a texture.

In velvet, burgundy is arguably the single best evening suit in existence — the pile catches light and the wine tone deepens under it. In wool or flannel, it becomes a serious autumn suit. In summer linen it tends to look thin — burgundy wants weight.
