Post-Delivery Alterations & Remakes: Your Complete Guide

Your suit has arrived. You try it on — and something is not quite right. Maybe the sleeves run a touch long. Maybe the trouser break sits higher than expected. Maybe the waist needs a little more room.

This is not a problem. This is tailoring.

Every SuitedNoir suit is made to your measurements, and we stand by the fit with two commitments: a free alterations guarantee and, when alterations alone cannot resolve the fit, a full remake at no additional charge. This guide explains exactly how both work.

What Is Included in Your Alterations Guarantee

First alterations are included at no cost. If your suit requires fine-tuning after delivery, we cover it — either through reimbursement at your local tailor or through our approved tailoring network.

Here is what can be adjusted:

Jacket

  • Sleeve length (shortening or lengthening within seam allowance)
  • Waist suppression — taking in or letting out the side seams
  • Minor shoulder refinements
  • Shortening the jacket body length

Trousers

  • Hemming — adjusting the trouser break
  • Waist in or out
  • Tapering the leg
  • Seat adjustments

Waistcoat

  • Taking in or letting out the waist
  • Adjusting strap tension at the back

Most suits are cut with seam allowance built in, which means a skilled tailor has room to work. These refinements are what transform a great suit into your suit.

What Cannot Be Altered

Some structural elements are less flexible and should be confirmed at the measurement stage:

  • Lapel width and style (notch, peak, or shawl)
  • Major shoulder reconstruction
  • Button stance — the position of the buttonholes

If any of these need to change, a remake may be the appropriate path. We will guide you through that assessment together.

When to Request Alterations

Request alterations within 30 days of delivery. This window ensures we can verify your order details and coordinate the process efficiently.

To make the most of your first try-on:

  • Wear a dress shirt in the collar size you provided at measurement
  • Wear dress shoes or the heel height you typically pair with the suit
  • Stand naturally — do not overstraighten or slouch
  • Sit down, walk a few paces, and lift your arms to test range of motion

Note down exactly what feels off before visiting a tailor, so the conversation is precise.

What Documentation You Need

Before visiting a tailor, contact us first. We will confirm the adjustment is within policy and provide a reference number. Then, when the work is done:

  1. Keep your tailor's receipt — itemised, showing each adjustment and its cost
  2. Take a photo of the suit after alterations — front and back, with shirt and shoes
  3. Submit both to us via email or through the contact form below

We will review and reimburse approved alteration costs promptly. Minor sleeve or trouser adjustments typically run $20–$50, which falls within our policy coverage.

The Remake: When Alterations Are Not Enough

If the fit issues are structural — meaning alterations cannot bring the suit to a proper fit — we remake the suit at no additional charge. This is part of our Perfect Fit Guarantee.

Remake Criteria

A remake is appropriate when one or more of the following applies:

  • The jacket shoulders are significantly off — the only true fix is a new cut
  • Multiple panels require correction simultaneously, making alteration impractical
  • The overall silhouette does not reflect the measurements provided
  • A tailor confirms in writing that alteration is not feasible

We assess each case individually. When you reach out, describe the fit issues in detail and — where possible — include photos. We may also ask for a tailor's written assessment.

What Happens After a Remake Is Approved

  1. We confirm the remake by email and re-verify your measurements
  2. If measurements have changed significantly (common for wedding suits ordered months in advance), we update them before cutting
  3. Production follows the same timeline as the original order
  4. The remade suit ships at no additional cost — including shipping

The Alterations Process: Step by Step

  1. Try on at home — full suit, with shirt and shoes, in your normal standing posture
  2. Note what needs adjusting — sleeve length, trouser break, waist comfort, any points of tension
  3. Contact us first — before visiting a tailor, let us confirm the adjustment is within policy
  4. Visit a tailor — use one of our approved partners or your own trusted local tailor
  5. Submit your receipt and photos — we will reimburse approved costs
  6. Enjoy the fit — step out knowing the suit was perfected for you

Common Scenarios by Occasion

Wedding suits — Alterations are especially common here. Pre-wedding weight changes, last-minute trouser tapering, or waistcoat adjustments are all standard. If you ordered months in advance, try the suit on as soon as it arrives — do not wait until the week of the event.

Business suits — Daily-wear suits often need sleeve or trouser hemming adjusted to match different shoe styles or shirt collars. These are quick, low-cost tweaks that make a significant difference over years of wear.

Evening and formal suits — Tuxedos frequently need waist suppression to achieve a sharper V-shape under stage or event lighting. This is one of the most common and most impactful alterations we see.

Our Commitment Does Not End at Delivery

Fast-fashion brands rarely talk about alterations — because they do not expect you to keep the garment for long. We are different. A SuitedNoir suit is built to last for years, to be worn at the most important moments of your life, and to grow with you. The alterations guarantee and remake policy are not backup plans. They are part of the promise we make when we begin cutting your cloth.
