"No brown in town"

The phrase comes from a specific 20th-century City of London formality: brown was country, black and grey were city, and the two did not mix. That world no longer exists. What survives is a colour that flatters warm and olive complexions better than grey ever will, photographs with genuine depth, and signals confidence precisely because so few men wear it.

The range

Deep chocolate is nearly formal — dark enough for evening, warm enough to feel human. Caramel is the most flattering middle brown. Camel is soft, autumnal and expensive-looking. Espresso is the darkest and the most versatile.

What brown demands

Brown shoes — never black. Cream or white shirts. Gold rather than silver. And texture: brown needs a matte, brushed cloth to hold its warmth. In a flat, shiny worsted it looks cheap; in a flannel, a tweed or a heavier linen, it comes alive.
