What camel actually does

It warms. Camel throws light back at the face, which flatters most complexions and softens a hard one. It reads as autumn, as country, as the good kind of old money. Against a white shirt and brown shoes it is effortless; against a navy tie and cream shirt it is quietly extraordinary.

Where it fails: black shoes, harsh overhead light, and any attempt to make it formal. Camel is not a boardroom colour and never has been.

The cloth to choose

Camel wants weight and texture. A wool in the 280–320gsm range, a flannel, or a tweed — anything with a matte, brushed surface that holds the warmth of the colour. In lightweight linen, camel tends to wash out into beige. In flannel, it glows.

Best worn: autumn weddings, country events, city dinners in October, and anywhere you want to look like you did not think about it.
