A banking town with Southern manners

Charlotte is the second-largest financial centre in the United States, and it dresses like it — but with a softness the Northeast does not have. Uptown still runs on navy and charcoal in mid-weight wool, notch lapel, quietly correct. The difference is that Charlotte will also forgive — even welcome — a lighter suit, an unlined jacket, a bit of colour in spring. It is the South, and the South has never confused formality with severity.

The humidity, and what to do about it

Summers here are long and heavy. The instinct is to buy a lighter suit; the better move is to lose the lining. An unlined or half-lined jacket in mid-weight wool outperforms a fully lined lightweight one by a wide margin.
