Chicago is the one American city where cloth weight is not optional

Most of the country can get away with a single mid-weight suit year-round. Chicago cannot. The wind off the lake in January is a different order of problem, and a 240gsm worsted that works beautifully in Atlanta will leave you miserable on Wacker Drive.

This is flannel country — brushed, matte, warm, and the most quietly luxurious cloth a man can own. A heavyweight wool at 320gsm or above, or a tweed for anything less formal, will carry you from November to March. Then the city flips: July and August are humid in a way that surprises people who only know the winter, and a linen or cotton suit becomes essential. Two suits, two seasons. There is no compromise cloth that does both here.

How Chicago dresses

The Loop is more formal than most people expect. Trading, law and banking around LaSalle and Wacker still run on navy and charcoal, and the city's Midwestern instinct is to be well-dressed without announcing it. That is exactly what made-to-measure is good at: nothing about a correctly cut suit shouts, and everyone notices anyway. In Fulton Market and West Loop, where the tech and restaurant money went, a suit in olive or chocolate with an open collar is the current uniform.

Weddings in Chicago

The lakefront summer wedding is the city's signature — Chicago Athletic Association, the Field Museum, a Fulton Market loft, or a boat off Navy Pier — and it means a suit that can handle humidity and still photograph well at golden hour. Linen in sage green, stone or terracotta does that. Winter weddings are their own thing entirely: black tie at the Drake or the Chicago History Museum calls for a proper tuxedo, and midnight blue reads richer than black under warm indoor light.
