Denver dresses down, and then it dresses up hard

The everyday register here is famously casual — a city where a puffer over a blazer is an accepted look and nobody wears a tie to the office. But Denver also has a serious wedding and events season, a growing finance and tech scene downtown, and a black-tie calendar that takes itself seriously. The result is a lot of men who own no suit, then need a very good one at short notice.

Altitude and dry air change the cloth

Denver is a mile up, and the air is dry. That has two consequences most tailors ignore. First, the temperature swing between midday and evening is enormous — a suit that is comfortable at 2pm can be inadequate by 8pm, which is an argument for a mid-weight wool that works across the range rather than a lightweight one that only works at noon. Second, dry air means linen wrinkles less and breathes beautifully here — it performs better in Colorado than it does on the coast.

Winter is genuine. Flannel and heavier wool earn their place from November through March.

Weddings in the mountains

This is Denver's specialty, and it has its own rules. A wedding in Vail, Aspen, Estes Park or a ranch outside Boulder is at altitude, often outdoors, and will be twenty degrees colder at sunset than it was at the ceremony. Lightweight suits fail here. A mid-weight wool, a tweed in autumn, or a flannel in winter is the correct answer — and the earthy palette of sage green, olive, rust and chocolate photographs against pine and granite in a way navy never quite does.
