Detroit has always taken clothes seriously

This is a city with a deep, specific tradition of dressing well — through Motown, through the hard years, and now through a downtown that is being rebuilt by people who care how they look while they do it. Detroit style is not preppy and it is not corporate. It has more edge than that: a stronger shoulder, a bolder colour, a peak lapel, a velvet jacket for an evening out. This is one of the few American cities where a suit is worn as an act of style rather than compliance.
