Miami is the only American city where the wrong cloth is genuinely unwearable

Everywhere else, a heavy suit in summer is uncomfortable. Here it is impossible. The humidity does not let up, and a fully lined worsted wool in August is not a style mistake — it is a physical one.

So Miami runs on linen, and it always has. Not the flimsy kind: a 280–320gsm linen that falls straight from the shoulder, breathes properly, and wrinkles in a way that reads as ease rather than neglect. Cotton for a little more structure. Seersucker when you want the air to actually move. Unlined or half-lined jackets, always — the lining traps far more heat than the cloth.

Colour is not optional here

Miami is a Latin city with Caribbean light, and the palette follows. Ivory, stone, sand, powder blue, sage green, terracotta. A navy suit in Miami in July is not conservative — it is simply wrong for the light. Brickell finance still runs on navy and charcoal for the boardroom, but even there the cloth is lighter and the jacket comes off.

Weddings in Miami

Beach weddings, and the rules are different. Vizcaya, the 1 Hotel South Beach, a rooftop in Wynwood, a private estate in Coral Gables. Sand and heat mean linen, an unlined jacket, and no waistcoat — a three-piece on a beach in June is a decision you will regret by the ceremony.
