What New York actually asks of a suit

New York is a walking city, and that is the fact most tailors ignore. Your suit is not carried from a garage to an office. It goes down subway stairs, across Midtown in August, into a bar in the West Village at 11pm and back onto the L train. It needs to survive that and still look like something.

Which means weight, and it means honest cloth. A mid-weight worsted wool in the 260–300gsm range is the New York default for good reason: it holds a line through a fourteen-hour day, it recovers from being sat in, and it doesn't shine at the seat after three months. In July and August, when the city is a sauna, a heavier linen or a cotton suit is the only civilised answer — light enough to breathe, heavy enough to hang straight instead of clinging.

Downtown finance still means navy and charcoal, notch lapel, two buttons, and nothing that draws attention. Midtown law is the same, a shade more conservative. But the city has loosened everywhere else: in Chelsea, Tribeca, and the creative and tech offices of the Flatiron, a well-cut suit in olive, chocolate or a soft grey reads as considered rather than corporate — and it will outlast every fleece-vest cycle the city goes through.

The city's venues run from the Bowery Hotel to the New York Public Library to a Brooklyn rooftop in June, and each one asks for something different. Summer weddings in Brooklyn and the Hudson Valley reward linen in sage green, terracotta or stone. Black-tie in Manhattan means a proper tuxedo — shawl or peak lapel, midnight blue if you want to look like you've done this before. Autumn upstate is the best excuse in America to wear tweed or flannel.
