Portland will not wear a suit to be respectable. It will wear one to be interesting.

This is a city with a genuine craft culture — people here care where things are made and how, and they will notice a well-cut garment long before they notice an expensive label. That is a very good market for made-to-measure and a very bad one for a generic navy two-piece. The Portland suit is textured, earthy and slightly unexpected: tweed, olive, chocolate, a soft flannel, worn with boots and no tie.

Damp, not cold

Portland's problem is persistent moisture rather than hard winter. Damp is what destroys a suit — it bags at the knee and the elbow and never quite recovers. Wool handles it far better than cotton or linen: it sheds water, and it springs back as it dries. Tweed, developed in a climate almost identical to this one, is the most sensible thing you can wear here and also the best-looking. Summer is short, dry and glorious — linen's brief moment.

Weddings in the Willamette Valley

Vineyards, forests and farms, almost all outdoors, almost all between July and September. A winery in Dundee, a lodge on the Columbia, a farm in Hood River. The palette is the landscape — sage green, olive, stone, chocolate, rust. Evenings turn cold quickly even in August, which is the argument for a jacket that fits properly enough to keep on.
