It is warm, earthen and desaturated — closer to clay and dust than to orange — which is exactly why it photographs beautifully and never looks loud.

Why terracotta became the colour

Weddings moved outdoors and the palette moved with them. Sage green, dusty rose, cream, stone — and terracotta, which anchors all of them. It is warm enough to flatter every complexion in the wedding party and muted enough that nobody in the photographs looks like they are wearing a costume.

It is also, for a groom, the rare colour that is distinctive without being attention-seeking. You will look like you chose it. You will not look like you are trying.

Cloth and light

Terracotta belongs in linen, and it belongs in natural light. A heavy linen at 280–320gsm hangs straight, breathes, and holds the dusty quality that makes the colour work. In a heavy winter wool it darkens into ordinary brown and loses the point.
