Charcoal

Charcoal suits, cut to your measurements. Charcoal is the most useful colour in menswear and the least discussed — it does everything black claims to do, without any of black's difficulty. It is dark enough to be authoritative, soft enough to wear in daylight, and it flatters nearly every complexion.

If a man owns one suit, it should probably be charcoal. If he owns two, the other should be navy.

Why it works where black doesn't

Charcoal has grey in it, and grey has depth. It catches light unevenly, which is precisely what makes it look expensive — the eye reads texture rather than a flat void. It moves comfortably from a 9am meeting to an 8pm dinner in a way that black simply cannot.

It is also the most forgiving colour for a larger or broader build: matte, dark, and quietly slimming without the severity of black.

The right cloth

A mid-weight wool at 260–300gsm is the year-round answer — enough body to hold a clean line, light enough to wear indoors. In winter, a charcoal flannel is one of the best-looking things in tailoring: soft, matte, and warmer than it looks. In summer, a charcoal linen is a sharper, less obvious choice than navy or stone.
