Who copper is for

It flatters warm, olive and darker complexions extraordinarily well, and it can overwhelm very pale ones — which is worth knowing before you order. Under low, warm light it glows. Under fluorescent office lighting it looks like a mistake. Choose the room before you choose the colour.

At an autumn wedding, at an evening event, at anything held outdoors after four o'clock in October — copper is unforgettable.

Getting it right

Restraint everywhere else. A cream or white shirt, brown shoes, no tie or a very quiet one. The suit is the statement; nothing else needs to be. A shiny cloth will tip copper straight into costume, so the surface must be matte — a brushed wool, a flannel, or a heavier linen that absorbs light rather than reflecting it.

And the fit has to be perfect. A bold colour in a bad cut is the worst combination in menswear. That is what made-to-measure is for.
