Why cream is difficult

Pale cloth shows everything. Every ripple across the chest, every pull at the button, every excess inch of fabric — all of it is visible in cream in a way it simply is not in navy or charcoal. There is no shadow to hide in.

The flip side: a cream suit that fits perfectly is one of the most striking things a man can wear, and there is nowhere it lands harder than at a wedding. It photographs beautifully in natural light and it does not compete with the bride — it complements her.

Cream, ivory, off-white

Ivory is warmer and slightly yellow. Off-white is cooler and closer to true white. Cream sits between them, and is the most wearable of the three for most complexions.

Cloth and setting

Linen, and a heavy one — 280–320gsm. Light linen in cream collapses and clings, which is the fastest way to ruin the whole effect. Cotton works for a more structured look. Wear it with brown or tan shoes, never black, and keep the shirt crisp.
