The South still dresses, and Atlanta dresses hardest

There is a real Southern tradition of caring how a man turns out — not fashion, exactly, but propriety — and Atlanta is where it meets corporate money. Coca-Cola, Delta, Home Depot, the law firms downtown, the film industry that quietly became the biggest in America. It is a city where showing up badly dressed is noticed, and noticed silently, which is worse.

The climate makes that hard. Atlanta summers are long, humid and unforgiving, and the received answer — a lightweight suit — is only half right. Weight is not the enemy; lining is. An unlined or half-lined jacket in a mid-weight wool breathes better than a fully lined lightweight one. For June through September, linen, cotton and seersucker — a fabric with genuine Southern lineage, and one that still looks right at a garden party in Ansley Park.

Winters are mild but real. A flannel or mid-weight wool covers December to February without ever becoming a burden.
