Perfect weather is a harder problem than bad weather

San Diego has no seasons to speak of — 72°F and sunny, more or less, indefinitely — and that sounds like it should make dressing easy. It does the opposite. There is no external reason to wear a suit, no cold to justify a jacket, and a culture built around the beach. So the suit here is entirely a choice, and it has to earn its place.

What works: light structure, unlined or half-lined, in cloth that breathes. A mid-weight wool is comfortable year-round in this climate — you will almost never need anything heavier. Linen and cotton are wearable eleven months of the year, which is true of almost nowhere else in America.

The colours the light allows

Southern California light is bright and warm, and it flatters colours that would look strange under a grey sky. Stone, sand, sage green, terracotta, ivory. A navy suit works, but it is the least interesting thing you can do in a city with this much sun.

Weddings on the coast

Beach and cliff-top, overwhelmingly. The Cape Rey, Scripps Seaside Forum, a garden in Rancho Santa Fe, a ceremony on the sand in Coronado. The rules for beach weddings are specific and most men get them wrong: linen, unlined jacket, no waistcoat, and colours that hold up against water and white light — ivory, stone, sage. Evenings on the coast turn cold fast, which is the reason to have a jacket that fits well enough that you want to keep it on.
