San Francisco is the American city where a suit is least likely to be a uniform and most likely to be a choice. Outside of the Financial District, law and a handful of firms downtown, nobody has to wear one — which means the men who do are wearing it because they wanted to. That raises the bar considerably. Linen in sage green, stone or terracotta is the right call, and a heavy wool is a mistake you make exactly once. In the city itself — City Hall, the Legion of Honor, a loft in SoMa — the register is more formal and a tuxedo still means a tuxedo.
