Rust belongs to autumn, and to the desert

There are two places a rust suit is unarguably correct. The first is an autumn wedding — against turning leaves, in low October light, rust does not compete with the landscape, it joins it. The second is the desert: Phoenix, Scottsdale, Sedona, Palm Springs. Against red rock and dry grass, rust looks like it grew there.

Where it struggles: fluorescent office light, grey city skies, and formal evening events. Rust wants sun, or it wants candlelight. It does not want a boardroom.

Getting it right

Rust needs a matte, textured cloth. In a flat worsted it looks synthetic; in a heavier linen, a wool, or a tweed, it develops the depth that makes it work. Cream or white shirt, brown shoes, and no tie — or a knit one in dark green.

And it must fit. A strong colour in a poor cut is the most conspicuous failure in menswear.
