No American city has a stronger relationship with a suit

New Orleans still dresses. Not out of corporate obligation — the city has less of that than most — but because turning out well is understood here as a form of respect, and occasionally as a form of joy. There are more reasons to wear a suit in this city than in almost any other, and more licence in how you wear it.

That licence extends to colour. Burgundy, olive, cream, velvet for evening, seersucker in summer — a fabric with more history here than anywhere in America, and no irony attached to it whatsoever.

The humidity is not negotiable

From April to October, New Orleans is a greenhouse. A fully lined worsted is not a style error here; it is an ordeal. Linen at a proper 280–320gsm, cotton, seersucker, and an unlined jacket — the lining traps far more heat than the cloth. Winters are mild and short: a mid-weight wool covers the whole of them.

Weddings in New Orleans

Longer, louder and more formal than most. The Board of Trade, Il Mercato, a courtyard in the French Quarter, a second line through the street afterwards. That last part matters — you will be walking, in public, in heat, for a while. Cut and cloth need to survive it.
